Today is a very exciting day for patients with blood clots and for health care professionals looking after such patients: the oral blood thinner Xarelto® (Rivaroxaban) was FDA approved today (Nov 2nd, 2012) for the use in patients with DVT (deep vein thrombosis) and PE (pulmonary embolism). The FDA announcement can be read, here.  Why is this exciting? Because therapy with Xarelto is much easier than the often cumbersome therapy with warfarin. The reasons for this are discussed below. The large clinical trial comparing  Xarelto (Rivaroxaban) with warfarin in the treatment of patients with newly diagnosed pulmonary embolism (PE) was published in the New England Journal of Medicine March 26th, 2012, showing that Xarelto was (a) as effective as warfarin in preventing new clots, (b) caused the same amount of overall clinically relevant bleeding, and (c) caused less major bleeding. Summary

A major study published in December 2010 in the prestigious New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM) shows that the new oral “blood thinner” Xarelto® (=Rivaroxaban) is (a) as safe and effective as warfarin in patients with acute deep vein thrombosis (DVT), and (b) is quite effective in preventing recurrent blood clots (DVT and pulmonary embolism=PE) if taken longer-term, Read the rest of this entry »
